"Not everyone does exercise for aesthetic reasons"
I loved being outside as much as possible when I was a wee guy and was always on the go. I was big into sports but never really gave the gym much thought until my mid 20s.
When I moved to Glasgow, I started doing some Thai boxing classes and Ross was recommended to me by one of the coaches for some 1 on 1 training.
Our diaries didn’t ever match up and that little phase of mine fizzled out. A while later I saw he had opened a gym and decided to give it a go.
Fast forward about 8 years and I’ve gone from member to student to coach with Improve. I train mostly for a sense of calm throughout the day and love learning about my body and capabilities.
Describe your personality in three words:
Tough one. I would hope … caring, aware, and easy-going.
What’s your earliest memory of fitness?
Watching the gymnastics at the Olympics and wondering how they were doing what they were doing.
What’s been your biggest achievement in fitness?
Really boring answer but on a personal level, I am super proud of my ability to keep things consistent. It’s a real team effort from my family and I to make sure I can train regularly but I feel like it has a huge pay off for all of us and I want to set a good example to my daughter about the importance of staying active.
Professionally, I am lucky enough to hit some big wins on an almost daily basis with people coming out of sessions buzzing they’ve learned something new or feeling a muscle they haven’t felt before but even more so seeing them grow in confidence and that carrying over to other aspects of their lives.
What inspired you to become a Personal Trainer?
I am very grateful for how much training has done and continues to do for me, both mentally and physically and wanted to try and pass on that feeling to as many people as possible.
What do you enjoy most about being a Personal Trainer?
I love being able to connect with people on a daily basis and add to their lives in whatever small way I can.
What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far in your career?
To be myself.
How would you describe your role at Improve Glasgow?
Number one supporter of Calum’s comedy career and in-house councillor.
Describe your coaching style in three words:
Supportive. Understated. Light-hearted
What do you do that you’re certain annoys the other coaches?
Probably hearing me chuckle from the other side of the gym at something that isn’t funny at all.
What do you think the members love most about your sessions?
I hope they always feel looked after and feel my genuine care for them and their goals.
What do you like about the other coaches at Improve?
When Calum hugs me and I feel like I’m 7 years old or when I come in to train but we end up just chatting shit for 2 hours instead.
Lewis’ dry sense of humour and infectious positivity.
What is your favourite exercise?
I love me a row – a pendlay probably just edges it at the top of the pile.
What is your least favourite exercise?
Anything ab-by.
Describe Improve Glasgow in 3 words:
